Spammer Gets 7 Year Sentence

August 16, 2008

A man who ran a phising and spamming scheme on AOL got sentenced to a 7-year jail term by the state of Connecticut last Wednesday.

Mark Dolan, 24, and his accomplises landed in prison after stealing AOL emails and sending a virus to users. Those who tried to log into their accounts got a false e-mail claiming that AOL “lost” their credit card numbers.

This report said that Dolan’s lawyers tried to ply the “mental illness” route. Dolan was said to have “suffered from “severe mental illness” and had made poor decisions following his father’s suicide. He argued that there were probably less than 50 victims of the scam, and that victim losses were closer to $43,000 — far less than argued by the government” (of around $400,000).

The report also said that Dolan and his posse have been doing this for almost 4 years.

Spammers beware!

You’ve got Jail…
